Massage Therapies

Massage therapy involves the application of pressure with the hands or elbows to manipulate muscles, tendons, connective tissues and ligaments for the purpose of relaxation, providing pain relief, and assisting with rehabilitating injuries.

It can assist with improving sleep, regulating the nervous system, decrease muscular aches and pains, and increase range of motion and posture in areas it is lost/decreased.

Swedish/Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage is a wonderful way to promote relaxation and revitalise the nervous system. It is a less specific form of physical therapy than remedial massage, but therapeutic to the mind and body. It will assist with general circulation, and gently stimulate the lymphatic system which can aid in immune function. Swedish massage is not covered by health funds, so is unable to be claimed.

Remedial Massage

Remedial massage can be used to treat specific musculoskeletal complaint/disorders. It focuses on a specific problem area that can be caused by soft tissue injury, incorrect posture and/or muscle tension. Treatment can be to muscles, tendons, ligaments and/or connective tissue, with the intention being to reduce or eliminate pain and restore function. Remedial massage is accepted by health funds, so those with appropriate cover may be eligible to receive a rebate. HICAPS and EFTPOS are available.

Flame Cupping

Flame cupping is a traditional chinese medicine technique whereby suction or a drawing action is created over an area of the body by using fire and special glass cups. Cupping can be applied to treat musculoskeletal complaints, and from a traditional chinese medicine (TCM) perspective can assist with promote movement of Qi (energy) within the meridians of the body, where there is blood stagnation, and/or cold and damp syndromes.

For example, in TCM it is believed that Qi and blood controls somatic (nervous system) function as they circulate through the external body within the meridian system. Musculoskeletal disorders are therefore described in terms of the disturbance of normal Qi and blood circulation within the meridians, and by using techniques such as cupping can assist with alleviating pain, inflammation and tension within the body.

Functional Cupping

Is a myofascial cupping technique that the uses suction cups to areas of the body that are requiring treatment, and incorporates various functional movements whilst the cups are placed on the body to assist in facilitating the release of connective tissue, thereby increasing range of motion to an area, decreasing pain and inflammation, and providing a new input to the nervous system which will assist with changing dysfunction and pain presentations.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is the practice whereby a very fine needle (similar to that of an acupuncture needle, but it should be noted that dry needling and acupuncture are NOT the same therapy) is inserted into a activated trigger point (each muscle has a trigger point), to assist in deactivating the trigger point, and thereby reducing pain, and increasing range of motion within that area of the body.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage has a number of benefits, including increased relaxation and reduced anxiety, improved sleeping patterns, increased mother-baby connection, reduced oedema (swelling), stabilising blood pressure and hormonal changes. It can also assist with reducing common areas of pain during pregnancy such as lower back and hip, neck and shoulder muscular and joint pain.
